舞台は江戸幕府滅亡後の慶応4年(1868年)、新政府の方針に従い商人となった元武士の由二郎だが婚約者のお冬やその兄・鐵之丞に促され脱走兵(新政府の方針に抗い藩を離れ奥羽越列藩同盟に参加した者を指す)となる。口絵の左は道で商売をしていた由二郎を蹴る鐵之丞、右はお冬。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): Set in the fourth year of the Keiō era (1868) after the fall of the Edo shōgunate, this is the story of Yoshijirō, a former samurai who became a merchant in accordance with the new government's policies. However, prompted by his fiancée Ofuyu and her brother Tetsunojō, he becames a deserter (referring to a person who defied the new government's policies, left their domain, and joined the Ōuetsu Reppan Dōmei).
