明治の新しい社会の中で主人公・淺子は強欲な父・金垣山六に気の進まない結婚を強いられそうになるが、山六の詐欺が露呈し家は没落、最後には火事で淺子は焼死。淺子には生命保険がかけられており、その死が事故か母を助けるための自殺かは不明。口絵は前景に淺子と、後景に火事で燃える家。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A tragic story of Asako, a young woman in the new Meiji era who is almost forced into a marriage she doesn't want by her avaricious father, Kanagaki Yamaroku. However, Sanroku's fraud is exposed, and the family falls into ruin. In the end, Asako is burned to death in a fire. She had a life insurance policy, and it's left ambiguous whether her death was an accident or a suicide to save her mother.
