玉川家の女中となったお澄は、憧れの男性がその家の令嬢・綾子の婚約者・海野幸彦と知り、嫉妬と罪悪感の中でチフスに倒れる。口絵の女性は服装からお澄と考えられるが、彼女が編み物をする場面は作中にない。また、東屋にいた綾子と幸彦が遠くにお澄の姿をみとめる場面があり、窓の外に描かれた屋根はその東屋か。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A tragic tale of Osumi, a maid in the Tamagawa family, who learns that the man she admires, Umino Yukihiko, is the fiancé of the Tamagawa family's daughter, Ayako. Overwhelmed by jealousy and guilt, she collapses from typhoid.
Description of the kuchi-e: The humble attire of the woman indicates that she is Osumi, but there is no scene in the story where she is knitting. The roof shown in the background may be that of an arbor where Ayako and Yukihiko sitting together to find Osumi in the distance.
